Overview of the GRE Exam
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test designed to assess the readiness of prospective graduate school applicants for advanced study in various fields. Whether you’re pursuing a Master’s degree, Ph.D., or MBA, the GRE serves as a critical component of the admissions process for graduate programs worldwide.
Key Components of the GRE Exam
- Verbal Reasoning:Evaluate your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, understand relationships between words and concepts, and reason with and draw conclusions from incomplete data. This section includes reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence tasks.
- Quantitative Reasoning:Test your ability to understand quantitative information, interpret and analyze data, solve problems using mathematical concepts, and apply mathematical models to real-world scenarios. Questions cover arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
- Analytical Writing:Assess your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively, analyze arguments, and support your ideas with relevant evidence and examples. You will be required to write two essays—a task analyzing an issue and a task analyzing an argument.
Test Format and Scoring
- The GRE General Test is administered in a computer-based format, with the exception of the Analytical Writing section, which includes essay responses evaluated by human raters.
- Each section of the GRE General Test is scored separately. Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores range from 130 to 170 in one-point increments, while Analytical Writing scores range from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.
- The total score for the Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning sections is calculated based on the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of the questions.
- GRE scores are valid for five years, allowing you to use your scores for multiple graduate school applications.
